French Onion Turkey Burger

Let me start this post off by saying that I’m a bit of a carnivore. Burgers? Yes! Chicken? Yes! Ribs? Yes. Steak? YES YES YES!  So I know my meats, and what tastes good.

One of the biggest surprises I had this summer cooking was turkey.  Sure, we eat turkey every Thanksgiving, but throwing it on the grill seems a bit weird.  That was until I tried these French Onion Turkey Burgers.

I’ve been trying to get us eating healthier, but some of my favorite summer dinners to make are burgers and tacos.  For some reason my brain never said, ” hey why don’t you try turkey burgers or ground turkey instead?”  Silly brain.  Turkey has more protein than beef, fewere calories than chicken (really?!?), and less fat than pork.  Not that I don’t like pork fat, but a girl has to balance out now and then.

These turkey burgers arent just the regular burgers you’re thinking of either.  They’re SO good.  Even the menfolk didn’t have anything to say about them not being hamburgers.  Yes!!  That’s because turkey is a flavorful alternative to other proteins, and it’s great for grilling – like turkey brats, burgers, tenderloins, and more!  Be sure that when cooking your turkey products, they reach an internal temperature of 165 degrees F.

Course: Main Dish

Ingredients

  • 4 Honeysuckle White turkey burgers, Ready to Season
  • ½ cup French onion dip {homemade or store bought}
  • 1 yellow onion, peeled and thin sliced
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 burger buns
Garnish Options:
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato
  • Bacon

Method

  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat, add butter and melt. Add onion slices, and stir to coat with butter. Cook, stir occassioanlly, until onions begin to brown slightly, 4 to 5 mins. Reduce heat to medium or medium-low (depending on your stove) and cook for about 10 mins until onions are caramelized.
  • While the onions are cooking, heat your grill (or grill pan or skillet) to medium-high heat. Place turkey burgers on grill, cook for 4 to 5 minutes, flip burgers, and cook for another 4 to 5 minutes, or until burgers are cooked through and there is no more pink. Remove from grill.
  • If desired, toast the cut side of each bun on the grill as well.
  • Place garnishes on bottom burger bun. Top with turkey burger. Place 1/4 of the caramelized onions on top of the burger. Spread 2 tablespoons of French onion dip on the top burger bun, and place the but on top to finish your burger. Enjoy!

Notes

Turkey burgers should be cooked to at least 165 degrees F for safe food preparation.
