Inside Out Buckeye Oreo Cookie Balls

Thanksgiving is over, Black Friday is in full swing, and Cyber Monday is just a few short days away.  Even though we spent yesterday with our family, tomorrow we’ll be spending the most important football game of the year with our friends.  That’s right kids.  It’s the Ohio State vs. Michigan game.  This year I’m putting a fun twist on my traditional treat and bringing Inside Out Buckeye Oreo Cookie Balls!

My family LOVES Oreo Cookies!  I’ve been making Oreo cookie balls for a few years now.  They’re a super yummy bite-sized treat that so easy to make with only three ingredients.  My family has come to expect Oreo cookie balls as part of my Christmas cookie plates.  With all the madness of my holiday baking whirlwind, making these treats with my kids is a welcomed break and a great way to get us all in the holiday spirit.

This year, I couldn’t wait until Christmas to make some Oreo cookie balls.  With all the possible ways to make and decorate these treats, I wanted to do something special.  So I took my mandatory treat this time of year – Buckeyes – flipped them inside out and got a new, totally to die for peanut butter/chocolate treat everyone is going to love!!  I really like the flavor the cream cheese lends to the traditional Buckeye taste.  I think they’re destined for greatness,  just like these other Oreo cookie balls…

Serves: about 36 Oreo cookie balls
Ingredients
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 package OREO cookies, finely crushed (36 cookies)
  • 2 bags Reese's Peanut Butter Chips (regular peanut butter cannot be substituted)
Instructions
  1. In a large bowl, mix cream cheese and cookie crumbs until blended.
  2. Portion Oreo mixture into tablespoon sized cookie balls onto waxed paper-lined baking sheets. Using your hands, roll each portion into a ball. Freeze for 10 minutes.
  3. Melt peanut butter chips in a double-boiler. Dip balls in melted peanut butter chips, being sure to leave some of the chocolate showing at the top for that Buckeye look.
  4. Place the cookie balls back onto the baking sheets. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until firm.
Notes
The melted peanut butter likes to harden pretty quickly on the cold cookie balls. The easiest ways to coat the cookie balls is to stick a toothpick in the top center and roll the cookie ball in the peanut butter. OR place the cookie ball on a fork, hold the fork over the peanut butter bowl, and use a spoon to drizzle peanut butter around the sides. Tap the fork on the edge of the bowl to knock off excess peanut butter. Use a knife to slide the cookie ball off the fork.
