Ingredients

Cookies:

  • 1 1/2 cups + 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter room temperature
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tablespoon buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon red gel food coloring {I used Americolor in Tulip Red}
  • 1/2 teaspoon red liquid good coloring {I used McCormick}

Frosting:

  • 2 sticks 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • Black food coloring

Instructions

Cookies:

  1. In a medium bowl, mix together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  2. In a large bowl, beat together butter and sugars until well combined. Add egg, milk, and vanilla. Mix to combine. Add food coloring. The batter should be a very rich red color. You can add more food coloring to your liking, but this was plenty red for me.
  3. Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Mix until dough forms, do not over beat.
  4. Refrigerate dough for 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 350 degree F. Line a cookie sheet with a Sil-Pat.
  6. Scoop cookie dough by the tablespoonful (or use a small cookie scoop) onto the prepared baking sheet. You can put 9 to 12 cookies depending on the size of your cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and allow cookies to cool completely.

Frosting:

  1. Beat together all ingredients until smooth. Add a few drops of black food coloring. Mix until well incorporated. Add more food coloring until desired gray is reached. Spread frosting on cookies.
