Hi, I’m Lisa from Cooking with Curls and I am so excited to be here! I would like to give a HUGE thank you to Julie for allowing me to take over her blog for the day 🙂
So just who am I? I am a stay at home mom with two amazing kids. We are originally from California, and moved to Iowa 14 years ago. I felt like I had entered the Twilight Zone! With no family or friends around, I needed to find ways to occupy my time. Whenever I am upset or bored, I start cooking, or cleaning, but cooking is much more fun. As a result, I have finally found my passion….. a love of cooking!
I started my blog last November and I have loved every minute of it. When you come visit me, you will find recipes that include family favorites like Guinness Barbecue Ribs, restaurant re-creations like Combination Yakisoba, and a lot of cakes baked with alcohol like Watermelon Margarita Cocktail Cakes. I think I’m starting to see a theme.
All of my recipes are made from scratch, with lactose-free / dairy-free options, and have easy to follow instructions with step-by-step photos!
Okay, enough about me…..let’s talk Whiskey Burgers! When I first found out that I would be sharing a recipe with Julie’s lovely followers, I started thinking up recipes. Then I came back over to Julie’s site to make sure that she had not thought of them first…..well she had! Hmmmm, think harder!!! Then I saw a commercial for a whiskey burger, from an establishment that I do not frequent. But it looked good, and who doesn’t like some whiskey added to their food?
Don’t be scared, the alcohol cooks down and you are left with a thick, sweet glaze that is amazing on this burger! Then I added caramelized onions and mushrooms, and of course some thick melted cheese and fresh homemade hamburger buns! Are you hungry yet? How about some pictures to seal the deal…..
and a quick collage of the steps…..
It looks like it’s time for the recipe, and for me to leave. Thanks again Julie, I had a blast 🙂

Whiskey Burger
Ingredients
- 1 1/4 cup lightly packed brown sugar
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 12 ounces Jack Daniel's whiskey or good-quality whiskey of your choice
- 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef
- 4 slices of provolone or Swiss cheese regular or dairy-free
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 medium yellow onion sliced thin
- 4 ounces sliced mushrooms or more if you love mushrooms
- 8 slices of un-cured bacon cooked
- Lettuce and tomato slices
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 hamburger buns toasted
Instructions
-
Place the brown sugar, honey, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire, and whiskey in a saucepan.
-
Bring to a boil, then reduce and simmer for 25 minutes, or until sauce has reduced by half. Do not let it boil the entire time, you will end up with whiskey caramel!
-
Saute onions in 1 Tablespoon of olive oil for 5 minutes.
-
Add the sliced mushrooms and continue to cook until soft and caramelized.
-
Add some sauce to the pan (if desired) and mix together with the onions and mushrooms.
-
Form burgers into patties, season with salt and pepper, and cook over medium heat until thoroughly cooked.
-
Place cheese slices on patties and cover to melt the cheese.
-
Place cheeseburger on bottom bun,
-
Top with the caramelized onion and mushroom mixture.
-
Top with 2 slices of bacon.
-
Top with lettuce, tomato slice, and top bun.
-
Serve with your favorite side dish.
Recipe Notes
Store left over sauce in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It is also delicious on chicken.
