It’s about to get a little Southern around here today y’all. I’m joining of one my blog friends Kelley from The Grant Life for a new recipe series 0 Blog Film Food. Each month, Kelley and Kathy pick a movie and we make a recipe inspired by the film. It’s a lot like the Food ‘n Flix group I’m in. What can I say, I’m a sucker for dinner (ish) and a movie.
This moth we’re making recipes from and inspired my Steel Magnolias. I remember watching this movie when I was little with my mom. It’s been ages since I’ve seen, and this was the perfect chance to get back on the wagon. One scene that I think is ingrained in anyone’s head who’s seen this movie is the Bleeding Armadillo Cake.
It made me laugh even more this time now that I’m in full wedding planning mode. I mean seriously. Who fills and animal shaped cake with red velvet. Leave it to Jackson’s aunt. I wasn’t about to tackle a full on armadillo cake, as much as you all mean to me. So I grabbed the basics and make cookies instead.
They’re totally delicious. I make a couple minor tweaks from the recipe on Sally’s Baking Addiction and topped those little babies off with some grey frosting. Because what’s a red velvet cookie without grey icing. It’s really not that hard to make…someone should tell the ladies in the movie.
Check out the other Steel Magnolias inspired recipes and take a foodie trip down south.

- 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter room temperature
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon buttermilk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla
- 1/2 teaspoon red gel food coloring {I used Americolor in Tulip Red}
- 1/2 teaspoon red liquid good coloring {I used McCormick}
Frosting:
- 2 sticks 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
- Black food coloring
Instructions
Cookies:
-
In a medium bowl, mix together flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
-
In a large bowl, beat together butter and sugars until well combined. Add egg, milk, and vanilla. Mix to combine. Add food coloring. The batter should be a very rich red color. You can add more food coloring to your liking, but this was plenty red for me.
-
Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients. Mix until dough forms, do not over beat.
-
Refrigerate dough for 30 minutes.
-
Preheat oven to 350 degree F. Line a cookie sheet with a Sil-Pat.
-
Scoop cookie dough by the tablespoonful (or use a small cookie scoop) onto the prepared baking sheet. You can put 9 to 12 cookies depending on the size of your cookie sheet. Bake for 10 minutes. Remove from oven and allow cookies to cool completely.
Frosting:
-
Beat together all ingredients until smooth. Add a few drops of black food coloring. Mix until well incorporated. Add more food coloring until desired gray is reached. Spread frosting on cookies.
