Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup lightly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 12 ounces Jack Daniel's whiskey or good-quality whiskey of your choice
  • 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef
  • 4 slices of provolone or Swiss cheese regular or dairy-free
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium yellow onion sliced thin
  • 4 ounces sliced mushrooms or more if you love mushrooms
  • 8 slices of un-cured bacon cooked
  • Lettuce and tomato slices
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 hamburger buns toasted

Instructions

  1. Place the brown sugar, honey, garlic powder, onion powder, Worcestershire, and whiskey in a saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil, then reduce and simmer for 25 minutes, or until sauce has reduced by half. Do not let it boil the entire time, you will end up with whiskey caramel!
  3. Saute onions in 1 Tablespoon of olive oil for 5 minutes.
  4. Add the sliced mushrooms and continue to cook until soft and caramelized.
  5. Add some sauce to the pan (if desired) and mix together with the onions and mushrooms.
  6. Form burgers into patties, season with salt and pepper, and cook over medium heat until thoroughly cooked.
  7. Place cheese slices on patties and cover to melt the cheese.
  8. Place cheeseburger on bottom bun,
  9. Top with the caramelized onion and mushroom mixture.
  10. Top with 2 slices of bacon.
  11. Top with lettuce, tomato slice, and top bun.
  12. Serve with your favorite side dish.

Recipe Notes

Store left over sauce in a sealed container in the refrigerator. It is also delicious on chicken.
